Q: How does RustStop® RS-5 work?

A: Rust is basically an electrochemical process. RustStop® RS-5 uses electricity to interrupt the rusting process.

RustStop® RS-5 uses an adapted version of cathodic protection enabling protection in atmospheric (open air) conditions. This technology makes use of a clever combination of both sacrificial anode and impressed current technologies. The RustStop® RS-5 Command Module applies 38-45 volts to the anodes which impresses a current (impressed current) into the vehicle forcing the electrons to flow though the metal and towards positively charge anodes. The anodes corrode (sacrifice) and the corrosion process is interfered with. RustStop® RS-5 is the only system available that successfully combines both Sacrificial Anode and Impressed Current technologies. The Sacrificial Anodes give customers visual proof that the system is working.

Q: How difficult is it to install a RustStop® RS-5 unit? Can I do it myself?
A: It is quick and simple for the "do it yourselfer" to install, but it is vital that it is installed correctly as incorrect installation can affect the efficiency.

Installation (simplified): Mount the command module in the engine compartment with the attached adhesive strips. Mount the four strips of special aluminum termed "protective anodes" using the specially designed conductive adhesive strips to areas of the vehicle where most water is likely to collect or run. Two at the front of the vehicle (usually in the hood recess areas) and the other two at the rear in similar areas. Run wires from the command module to each anode and attach.

Q: I have heard that cathodic protection will only be effective if the metal is submerged in water and is ineffective in dry conditions?
A: That is true for "classical cathodic protection" systems. RustStop® RS-5 uses an adapted version of cathodic protection enabling protection in atmospheric (open air) conditions. This technology makes use of a clever combination of both sacrificial anode and impressed current technologies. Instead of relying on the electrolyte (water) to surround the anodes and vehicle, a current is impressed onto the vehicle forcing the electrons to flow though the metal and towards strategically placed positively charge anodes. The anodes corrode (sacrifice) and the corrosion process is interfered with. RustStop® RS-5 is the only system available that successfully combines both Sacrificial Anode and Impressed Current technologies.

Q: Will RustStop® RS-5 cause electrical shocks if a person touches the vehicle.

A: No. RustStop® RS-5 is as safe as any other electrical device on your vehicle and will not cause any electrical shocks by merely touching the vehicle.

Q: Will RustStop® RS-5 interfere with any electronic devices that are already on my vehicle, such as the computer or car alarm?

A: No. RustStop® RS-5 works like any other electronic device on your vehicle. The body of your vehicle is already hooked up to the negative side of the battery (negative ground). When you turn on your radio, headlights etc. the positive connection is what is being turned on. This causes electrons to flow from the negative battery terminal towards and through the device being used (positive draws negative). Some devices on vehicles don't even use a negative wire coming from the battery, instead they hook directly to the negative ground of the vehicle. This method is becoming more popular because it saves auto makers money on extra wires and labor. A "body control module" uses this technique. When installing RustStop® RS-5, a positive wire is hooked up to each anode, which draws electrons from the battery through the body of the vehicle to the anodes.

Q: Will RustStop® RS-5 be effective on a vehicle that has existing rust?

Q: Will RustStop® RS-5 drain my battery?
A: No. RustStop® RS-5 draws less current than most vehicle alarm systems and uses latest technology to enable a voltage step-up to 45V without overloading the battery.
